In modern smartwatches, two approaches dominate: a full-fledged clock with an OLED or LCD display, capable of displaying notifications and other content from a smartphone, and a mechanical clock with arrows that can only track activity and sleep, and vibration is used for notification in them. At the same time, there are also separate hybrid smart watches that combine the advantages of both approaches. In the new line of watches, Fossil used a similar concept, combining the screen with the hands, but used an electronic ink display, which is characterized by extremely low power consumption and the ability to stay “on” all the time without compromising energy efficiency. As part of the Hybrid HR, the company introduced two models – HR Charter and HR Collider and their variations, which have slight differences, mainly regarding the appearance of the watch and the material from which the strap is made – it can be stainless steel, leather or silicone. The watch case, regardless of model or variation, is made of stainless steel and has a diameter of 42 mm. The watch uses a round monochrome e-ink screen with a diameter of 27 mm with a round neckline in the center for the axis on which the hour and minute hands are fixed. Around the screen is a physical dial. There is no touch panel – all control is carried out through three buttons on the side, and the functions of the buttons can be modified in the settings of the companion mobile application with which smartwatch communicates via Bluetooth. Hybrid HR gadgets are equipped with heart rate sensors and user activity tracking, backlight and vibration. In addition, they are not afraid of spray and rain. The watches presented by Fossil use the manufacturer’s proprietary operating system, rather than Wear OS, as previously suggested. It allows you to change the image displayed on the e-ink display as a background, is able to display various notifications from a smartphone (such as a calendar reminder, SMS text message or caller’s phone number), date, weather forecast, step and sleep statistics, as well as other typical smartwatch information. In addition, with the help of smartwatch data, you can control the music player on the attached smartphone, look for a lost phone (for this, the smartwatch “rings” on it), and Hybrid HR devices also support the timer, stopwatch, alarm and display the second time selected on the screen time zone. Thanks to the e-ink display, smartwatch can work on a single charge for up to two weeks, despite the rather modest battery with a capacity of 55 mAh. It takes about an hour to fully charge the built-in battery.
